Our Founding Story: Nursing the Planet Back to Health
Trish Trash was founded on the belief that one person can make a significant difference. With over 38 years of experience as a Certified Perioperative Nurse, our founder Trish Barron witnessed firsthand the staggering amount of waste generated in healthcare settings. She saw an opportunity to transform how medical waste was managed and to create a sustainable solution that could be scaled to other sectors. Motivated by this vision, she founded Trish Trash—a grassroots Florida-based not-for-profit organization dedicated to creating a transparent and responsible recycling process.

Trish’s extensive experience in healthcare gave her a unique perspective on the importance of meticulous waste management. She recognized the critical need for a solution that not only addressed the environmental impact of waste but also offered practical, scalable methods for recycling. Why Trish Trash is Unique: Transparency, Accountability, Impact
Full-Cycle Recycling
At Trish Trash, we believe that every step of the recycling process should be documented, transparent, and fully accountable. Our unique approach to full-cycle recycling ensures that every material—from pickup to its final use in new products—is managed sustainably and transparently with our traceability system tracking and verifying each stage. By scanning a unique QR code, anyone can see the provenance of our materials. Our traceability program links recycled materials to verified carbon credits, providing accountability throughout the entire process.
Coming Soon: Certified Carbon Credits
Trish Trash creates real, certified carbon credit offsets by eliminating greenhouse gases and plastic pollution. We are working to upend the carbon credit supply chain. Instead of selling credits before the impact work has been done and verified, we plan to complete the recycling process, track the inputs and outputs, and only then create the carbon credit to be sold. This method will provide buyers and sellers with the assurance that our carbon credits are real and impactful.
Community Partnerships
Partnerships are a cornerstone of our approach. Our collaboration with Bright Futures and AAU exemplifies how we integrate community engagement into our recycling efforts. The Trish Trash app allows Florida high school students to document their recycling contributions and earn points toward their Bright Futures scholarships. At AAU events, players can earn Bright Future credits by participating in recycling activities, helping to foster a culture of environmental responsibility among youth.

Thousands of Tons of Waste Diverted: We have diverted thousands of tons of waste from landfills, significantly reducing greenhouse gases and plastic pollution. For example, in Lee County, Florida alone, we have diverted over 300 tons of medical supply packaging from landfills.
Community Engagement: Our clean-up events and educational programs have mobilized thousands of volunteers and raised awareness about the importance of recycling.
Business Partnerships: We’ve helped numerous businesses implement sustainable practices, reducing their waste and enhancing their environmental impact.
